Reflections On
Disease
I like to think that
illness doesn't really exist, but is kind of an ‘agreement' that doctors
decided to invent. By this I mean that everyone copes with his or her
tangible and intangible circumstances individually, while somebody
else builds a ‘medical profile' (as
they describe it) comparing ideal, healthy patterns, but disconnected from
reality.
Consider yourself an
independent entity. All the rest is convention.
Anyway, the key is the way
you decide to face your ‘abnormality': a) as something to be fixed whatever
the cost, or b) as a situation to be accepted in your life process.
Well, I strongly believe
the second one is the healthiest, at least psychologically. I hope my model
can help other people. After 20 years without any treatment, I have come to
recognize self-acceptance (by far) as my the most reliable coping mechanism.
It's great that scientific
and technological advances help us to alleviate many of our symptoms,
particularly if they are also able to help us accept and love ourselves a
bit more. Probably the more you love yourself, the most you are able to love
others.
It's easy to understand.
When you feel better everybody notices.
